STARS/KU offer opportunities on both campuses to learn more about the university

Students attending the KU Campus Visit (from L-R, sitting) were Molly Pike, Angelina Sierra, Tara Davidson (from L-R, standing) Donte Adams and Rhashard Wright.

STARS kicked off the spring semester campus tours with a visit north to the University of Kansas on February 23rd.  While on the visit, students were given an admissions presentation, a campus and housing tour, and had an opportunity to meet staff from KU's TRIO/Student Support Services project.  Some of the students even took advantage of the chance to meet with an advisor in their desired program.

Couldn't attend the KU trip?
Students who were interested in the campus visit but were unable to attend will have another great opportunity to learn more about KU on Tuesday, March 6th.  Amanda Painter, Transfer Admissions Representative for KU, will be hosting an ice cream social event at NCCC in the Student Union Room 206 from 12:00-2:30.  Students are invited to come by, ask questions, and get more information on KU admissions.

STARS Campus Tour - Spring Preview

As STARS is currently in its Campus Tour "Off Season,"  I find it fitting to preview our upcoming spring schedule.  So far this year we've traveled to Wichita State, Washburn, Pittsburg State, and Emporia State - giving over 20 students the opportunity to see these campuses and the services they offer firsthand.  So what remains?  Three more schools are left on the docket.  Check out the details below!  Sign-ups for each event will be made available at the beginning of each respective month.

We return to KU once again, and the trip looks to include an admissions presentation, student panel, campus tour, dining experience, and a housing tour.  We have also requested a presentation from their Supportive Educational Services, which is a TRIO program similar to STARS.  If you are interested in learning more information about KU, materials are available in the CAVE.  You may also contact their Transfer Admissions Representative designated to NCCC, Amanda Painter at apainter3@ku.edu or 785.864.5412.

This will mark our first visit to Joplin, MO to visit the campus of MSSU (at least during my tenure).  Although the details have not been completely worked out yet, the trip will likely include an admissions/financial aid presentation tailored toward transfers, a campus tour, housing/dining experience, and an opportunity to visit with their TRIO program - Project Stay.  Questions about admissions can be directed toward their Transfer Representative, Jennifer Pliler at pliler-j@mssu.edu or 417.625.3573.

STARS continues our tradition of visiting KSU on their Annual Open House.  This isn't the most conventional of campus visits, but offers a great opportunity to see displays from virtually every program on campus, and provides a feel of how busy the campus may look on a typical day.  The visit will include a student ambassador led campus tour, and chances to win prizes and score some free KSU gear!  In the past, students have also participated in workshops designed specifically for transfers.  For more information on KSU admissions, you can contact their Transfer Representative for NCCC, Deana Core at tfradmit@ksu.edu or 785.532.6250.

Transfer Workshop w/ PSU Recap

Hey Future Transfers,

Thanks for taking the time to attend the workshop yesterday.  As I promised, I am following up to the common questions/comments on the cards with some direct links and contact information.

#1 Worry = Cost
As I mentioned in closing yesterday, it is important to keep in mind that FAFSA priority deadlines are typically much sooner for 4-year colleges/universities than they are for NCCC.  Be sure to look into where you want to go and have yours submitted by the deadline to help ensure you get the full amount you are eligible for.  Also, check out the Transfer Blog for Financial Aid/Scholarship information that may be helpful.  If you have questions about scholarships to specific colleges, please come visit me.  There are also Application Fee Waivers to some schools, which allows you to apply for admission for free!

#2 Worry = Transferring Credits
The earlier in your community college experience you decide on your next step, the better your advisors can help to make sure you are taking classes that will fit that college/program.  To see how your courses transfer to some of the area colleges, check out the Transfer Equivalencies page on the Transfer Blog.  Sometimes the coding/spreadsheets can be hard to interpret, so let me know if you have any questions!

Best Question Award
What is the most common problem people face when transferring?
In my experience with transfers, it is waiting until the last minute to begin the process.  All that this will ensure is that you don’t get priority enrollment and you miss the boat on financial aid and scholarships.  Start the admissions process early (about a year out), and get in contact with that schools Admissions/Transfer Representative so you can be sure they get the materials they need from you, and you get the information you need from them!

Thanks again to our co-presenter, PSU Admissions Rep – Penny Cook.  If you have any questions of her, you can email her at pcook@pittstate.edu or call at 620.235.4293.
